May we introduce ourselves shortly? The Sharecroppers (of Switzerland), a Swiss band, from 2504 Biel-Mett to be exact, plays American Roots Music. The mini-CD „A Blast From The Past“ will give you an idea of our musical spectrum. At the moment we are working on our next production which contains a lot of our own compositions plus some cover versions. Bio

The music played by The Sharecroppers from Mett near Biel (home of the legendary Mett-Sausage) can best be called American Roots Music. The infl uences are numerous: Appalachian Folk, Honky Tonk, Bluegrass, Hillbilly Music, Vaudeville Blues, Gospel, Rockabilly, Cajun and Rhythm’n’Blues can all be heard in the band’s songs. Their repertoire, in addition to original compositions, gems and rare fi nds from 1928 to the present time includes sad ballads, fast-paced Bluegrass numbers, Western Swing and streamlined guitar parts.

The band, formed in autumn 2009, was a fusion of two Biel bands – ‘The Hanks’ and ‘The Tennessee Four’. ‘The Hanks’ were infl uenced by Hank Williams and ‘The Tennessee Four’ by Johnny Cash. What strikes the listener is the wide assortment of instruments the band plays and the sound created by fi ve individual singing voices. Being The Sharecroppers enables the guys to live out their love for true and authentic music, and whoever has heard them live knows that, not only do the look great, they love and live for their music.

The first mini CD ‘A Blast From The Past’ (2011) contains 7 songs and 4 videos. It’s self-published and is available from the website sharecroppers.org for CHF 19, and includes 4 beautiful postcards. The next CD is already in progress and with will be available next year.

Where does the band’s name ‘The Sharecroppers’ come from?
Apart from the fact that the name sounds very good, it fi ts well with the music the band plays. The musical roots go way back to somewhere in the 20s/30s of the last century, a time affected by a worldwide economic crisis and unemployment. In the American plains many farmers were made destitute by so-called ‘dust bowls’ or sandstorms. In order to survive they fl ed along Route 66 to California where they were hired as migrant workers (sharecroppers), also known as ‘hobos’. Woodie Guthrie sang about the hard life of the ‘Okies’ (migrant workers from Oklahoma) in his dust bowl ballads and thereby deeply infl uenced American folk music.
The musical odyssey begins more or less here, and moves across the landscape with Bluegrass and Western Swing to Honky Tonk and Old School Rockabilly.
The Sharecroppers play the music that suits them, and as each musician has a personal preference for the way he plays this handcrafted music, a broad spectrum of styles is offered to the audience.

Bio

The Sharecroppers de Mett à Bienne (Home of the legendary Mett-Sausage) jouent un son pouvant être décrit comme de l’American Roots Music. Dans les chansons du groupe, on entend des influences variées comme : Appalachian Folk, Honky Tonk, Bluegrass, Hillbilly Music, Vaudeville Blues, Gospel, Rockabilly, Cajun et Rhythm’n’Blues. Leur répertoire, regroupant des compositions originales ainsi que des perles et trouvailles de 1928 à nos jours, nous offre des ballades tristes et des morceaux de bluegrass exaltants, en passant par du Western Swing et des airs de guitare aérodynamiques.

Le groupe s’est formé en 2009 suite à la fusion des deux groupes biennois „The Hanks“ et „The Tennessee Four“. „The Hanks“ étaient infl uencés par Hank Williams, „The Tennessee Four“ par Johnny Cash. Ce qui frappe dans ce groupe, c’est le méli-mélo d’instruments ainsi que les chants à plusieurs voix, puisque les cinq musiciens chantent. Avec les Sharecroppers, les garçons vivent pleinement leur amour de la musique pure et authentique et ceux qui les ont déjà vus sur scène savent qu’ils ne se contentent pas uniquement de paraître renversants, non, ils vivent et aiment leur musique.

D’où vient le nom du groupe „The Sharecroppers“?
Outre le fait que ce nom sonne bien, il colle également très bien à leur musique. Les racines musicales du groupe se situent quelque part entre les années 20 et 30 du siècle dernier. Une époque marquée par la crise économique et e chômage. Dans les plaines américaines, les agriculteurs tombaient dans la pauvreté après le passage de tempêtes e sable (Dust Bowls) et fuyaient vers la Californie par la route 66. Qualifi és de rôdeurs, de vagabonds, ou encore e hobos, ils louaient leurs services comme travailleurs itinérants et pratiquaient le métayage (Sharecroppers) pour survivre. Woodie Guthrie a chanté dans ses Dust Bowl Ballads le dur sort réservé aux Okies (travailleurs itinérants de l’Oklahoma) et a profondément marqué la musique folk. L’odyssée musicale commence à peu près là. Elle s’insinue au travers des paysages et rencontre au passage le bluegrass, le Western Swing, le Honky Tonk et le Rockabilly old school. Les Sharecroppers jouent ce qui leur plaît. Puisque chaque musicien a ses propres préférences, l’auditeur peut alors découvrir un large éventail de styles.

Was geht eigentlich bei den Sharecroppers?

In der letzten Zeit ist es ja eher ruhig geworden um die wilden Moonshiner aus Mett.

Nun, wir haben die kreative Pause genutzt um neue Songs zu schreiben und neue ""eigene"" Coverversionenzu proben. Das wird richtig gut! Die freien Tage über Auffahrt haben wir das Material aufgenommenund nach den Sommerferien dürfte unsere neue CD da sein. Vielleicht wirds dann auch Herbst aber zu Weihnachten haben wir dann das passende Geschenk für die die schon alles haben.

Den Sommer hindurch gibts wieder einige Frischluftanlässe, mehr hier > Konzerte

Woher kommt der Bandname ""The Sharecroppers""?

Abgesehen davon, dass der Name sehr gut tönt, passt er auch sehr gut zu der Musik die wir spielen.

Unsere musikalischen Wurzeln beginnen irgendwo in den 20er/30er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts.
Eine Zeit geprägt von der Weltwirtschaftskrise und Arbeitslosigkeit, in den amerikanischen Plains verarmten viele Farmer wegen eines Phänomens das Dustbowl genannt wurde.
Die verarmten Farmer flüchteten über die Route 66 nach Kalifornien und verdingten sich als Sharecroppers oder Wanderarbeiter ""Hobos"" um zu überleben.
Woodie Guthrie und seine Dust Bowl Ballads besingen das harte Los der ""Okies"" und haben die Folk-Musik entschiedend geprägt.

Unsere musikalische Odyssee beginnt in etwa dort und geht quer durch die Landschaft über Bluegrass und Western Swing zu HonkyTonk und OldSchool-Rockabilly.

Wir spielen was uns gefällt und da jeder von uns seine eigenen Vorlieben für die Spielarten der handgemachten Musik hat, eröffnet sich dem Zuhörer ein breites Spektrum an Stilen.

Hier ist eine Definition von Sharecropping, welche sich in erster Linie auf die befreiten Sklaven im Süden bezieht, von der Sklaverei in die Armut:

Sharecropping was a system of agriculture instituted in the American South in the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War. It essentially replaced the plantation system which had existed, with slave labor, in the years before the war.

In sharecropping, a poor farmer who did not own land would work a plot belonging to a landowner. The farmer would receive a share of the harvest as payment.

Generally speaking, sharecropping doomed freed slaves to a life of poverty.

Beginning of the Sharecropping System

Following the elimination of slavery, the plantation system in the South could no longer exist. Landowners, such as cotton planters who had owned vast plantations, had to face a new economic reality. They may have owned vast amounts of land, but they did not have the labor to work it, and they did not have the money to hire farm workers.

The millions of freed slaves also had to face a new way of life. Though freed from bondage, they had to cope with numerous problems in the post-slavery economy.

Many freed slaves were illiterate, and all they knew was farm work. And they were unfamiliar with the concept of working for wages.

Indeed, with freedom, many former slaves aspired to become independent farmers owning land. And such aspirations were fueled by rumors that the U.S. government would help them get a start as farmers with a promise of ""forty acres and a mule.""

In reality, former slaves were seldom able to establish themselves as independent farmers. And as plantation owners broke up their estates into smaller farms, many former slaves became sharecroppers on the land of their former masters.

How Sharecropping Worked

In a typical situation, a landowner would supply a farmer and his family with a house, which may have been a shack previously used as a slave cabin.

The landowner would also supply seeds, farming tools, and other necessary materials. The cost of such items would later be deducted from anything the farmer earned.

Much of the farming done as sharecropping was essentially the same type of labor-intensive cotton farming which had been done under slavery.

At harvest time, the crop was taken by the landowner to market and sold. From the money received, the landowner would first deduct the cost of seeds and any other supplies.

The proceeds of what was left would be split between the landowner and the farmer. In a typical scenario the farmer would receive half, though sometimes the share given to the farmer would be less.

In such a situation, the farmer, or sharecropper, was essentially powerless. And if the harvest was bad, the sharecropper could actually wind up in debt to the landowner.

Such debts were virtually impossible to overcome, so sharecropping often created situations where farmers were locked into a life of poverty.

Some sharecroppers, if they had successful harvests and managed to accumulate enough cash, could become tenant farmers, which was considered a higher status. A tenant farmer rented land from a landowner, and had more control over how the management of his farming. However, tenant farmers also tended to be mired in poverty.
Economic Effects of Sharecropping

While the sharecropping system arose from the devastation following the Civil War, and was a response to an urgent situation, it became a permanent situation in the South. And over the span of decades it was not beneficial for southern agriculture.

One negative effect of sharecropping was that it tended to create a one-crop economy. Landowners tended to want sharecroppers to plant and harvest cotton, as that was the crop with the most value, and the lack of crop rotation tended to exhaust the soil.

There were also severe economic problems as the price of cotton fluctuated. Very good profits could be made in cotton if the conditions and weather were favorable. But it tended to be speculative.

By the end of the 19th century, the price of cotton had dropped considerably. In 1866 cotton prices were in the range of 43 cents a pound, and by the 1880s and 1800 it never went above 10 cents a pound.

At the same time that the price of cotton was dropping, farms in the South were be carved up into smaller and smaller plots. All these conditions contributed to an widespread poverty.

And for most freed slaves, the system of sharecropping and the resulting poverty meant their dream of operating their own farm could never be achieved.
